I’ve been working with a personal trainer through the Silver Sneakers program at our local rec center. She has me working on core training and overall fitness goals.
Because it’s good for me at this point in life. (Or so I’m told).
Genetics (or maybe lifestyle) have not blessed me with one of those flexible Gumby bodies that loves to stretch, bend, contort and gyrate. My body type adapts well to a leather couch. I like doing leg curls by pressing the recliner button up and down. I often confuse lunging with lunching.
So we’re doing core training – which is apparently all the rage these days. I generally feel a sense of accomplishment after each session, but I’m pretty sure I can get a great sense of accomplishment after reading a book or getting my dog to stop licking himself.
For me to keep motivated, I gotta have a goal. Something to aim for. Fitbit stats don’t do it for me. Charting steps, heart rate, BMI, weight, etc isn’t really my thing.
I’m not looking for some sort of competitive goal. I don’t need to be one of the top 5 old farts in cornhole at my local club.
And really, I’m not that much of a joiner. I’m not looking for a league of some sort where I have to coordinate my schedule with 20 other people that have to cancel and reschedule continually.
For me, goals need to be personally motivating. Something that actually gets me a dopamine hit while being good for me. And allows me schedule flexibility/freedom.
To me, the answer is my bicycle. The training I’m doing needs to translate into a cycling goal.
I’ve got an idea….
